Simplifying the EdTech ecosystem with Google Classroom

August 5, 2022Nearpod Team

How does Nearpod work with Google?

Educators love Nearpod for all the many types of instruction they can deliver through a single platform, eliminating the need to manage many different tools. But, educators still accessed an average of 967 products per month in the 2020-2021 school year.  Eight of the top 10 most accessed were Google products. Nearpod is a Google for Education Partner to help simplify this landscape for educators and students by adding seamless Nearpod integrations to a school or district’s Google for Education solutions, including Google Classroom.

Nearpod’s integration with Google Classroom

Google Classroom is an all-in-one tool where educators, students, and classes can engage together in lessons and coursework. Millions of educators and students worldwide use Google Classroom, and we wanted to make it easier to use Nearpod within this ecosystem. In 2019, we created the Nearpod Chrome extension, and in 2021 Nearpod was named an early access partner for Google’s latest release, Classroom add-ons.

What are Google Classroom add-ons?

During Google’s The Anywhere School 2022 event, Google announced the upcoming release of their newest feature, Classroom add-ons. Classroom add-ons allow educators and students to access EdTech tools, all with a single login. Teachers can create engaging assignments and even grade and review work from add-ons. At the same time, students can access the tools they need without having to worry about remembering different passwords and navigating to external websites. Admins can set up each add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace for their district in just a few clicks. In return, they are enabling teachers and students to use their favorite tools without having to leave Classroom. With the Teaching & Learning Upgrade or Google Workspace for Education Plus editions, you can choose from a growing list of add-ons.

What can I do with the new Nearpod Classroom add-on?

Nearpod’s add-on integration increases functionality to save educators time by allowing them to assign lessons, review reports, and record grades directly within Google Classroom from any device. Students can join Nearpod lessons from Classroom without needing to enter a code. This improves the workflow for educators and students alike. Our add-on works with any Nearpod subscription, allowing educators to perform tasks directly in Google Classroom:

  • Access their Nearpod lessons and add them as an Assignment, Quiz Assignment, or Question
  • Assign Nearpod lessons in Live or Student-Paced modes for their entire class or individual students
  • Add important point values, due dates, or instructions
  • Prompt student joins to the lesson through the link in Google Classroom
  • View post-session reports in Google Classroom
  • Grade Nearpod lessons in Google Classroom

The Google Classroom add-on is available for schools and districts that subscribe to Google’s Workspace for Education Teaching and Learning Upgrade or Education Plus editions. Google Classroom admin must enable Nearpod as an add-on before it is available to be used by teachers and students.

What can I do with Nearpod’s Google Chrome extension?

Nearpod’s Google Chrome extension for Google Classroom allows educators to create Nearpod Assignments within Classroom. Educators can access their Nearpod Library and assign Live and Student-Paced lessons directly to Google Classroom. This extension is free, easy to use, and available to users of any Google subscription type. Our free extension allows educators to:

  • Access their Nearpod lessons and add them as an assignment within Google Classroom
  • Assign Live or Student-Paced lessons directly in Google Classroom
  • Add important point values, due dates, or optional instructions for their students
  • Prompt student joins to the lesson through the link in Google Classroom

Which Nearpod integration should I use with Google Classroom?

If your school or district subscribes to Google’s Teaching and Learning Upgrade or Education Plus editions, use the Nearpod Classroom add-on to get the newest functionality like reviewing post-session reports and entering grades. Don’t see Nearpod listed as an available add-on? Reach out to your Google admin and ask to enable the Nearpod add-on.

If your school or district subscribes to Google’s Education Fundamentals or Education Standard editions, the Nearpod Chrome extension is the best way to use Nearpod with Classroom.
